Depressed? Sad? Moody?

11/28/2017

Picture

The days are getting shorter and less natural vitamin D3 (the happy vitamin) is available via the sun.  This all can affect our mood. This is a great documentary video about the reasons so many are depressed these days. It is a story about depression and discusses an important mechanism that emerging research shows may have an interesting relationship with a condition that affects so many. That mechanism is systemic inflammation. The work is done by Rhonda Perciavalle Patrick who has a Ph.D. in biomedical science.

Mushrooms & antioxidants

This great article shows that Mushrooms are full of antioxidants and that they may have anti-aging potential. Mushrooms may contain unusually high amounts of two antioxidants that some scientists suggest could help fight aging and bolster health, according to a team of researchers.

In a study, researchers found that mushrooms have high amounts of the ergothioneine and glutathione, both important antioxidants, said Robert Beelman, professor emeritus of food science and director of the Penn State Center for Plant and Mushroom Products for Health. The professor said that: "When the body uses food to produce energy, it also causes oxidative stress because some free radicals are produced. Free radicals are oxygen atoms with unpaired electrons that cause damage to cells, proteins and even DNA as these highly reactive atoms travel through the body seeking to pair up with other electrons."
Furthermore, according to the researchers, who report their findings in a recent issue of Food Chemistry, the amounts of ergothioneine and glutathione in mushrooms vary by species with the porcini species, a wild variety, containing the highest amount of the two compounds among the 13 species tested. The researchers found that the porcini has the highest, by far, of any we tested, said Beelman. This species is really popular in Italy where searching for it has become a national pastime.

Workout session

Just wanted to share a typical workout session, done at home with very minimal cost implications but with great health benefits. Working out outside, barefoot lets you soak up some sunshine, it is good for your body & mind, cheaper than a gym, decreases depression and anger, feels less routine than working out indoors, and you can breath better air.

Mount Laguna lake
Mount Laguna by the big rock
We did a great 4 hour hike up in Mount Laguna (Google Map). It was mystical, pretty wet and amazingly beautiful at the same time. And the health benefits of a nice long walk couldn't be better.
According to Mayo Clinic, regular walking can help you:
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles
  • Improve your mood
  • Improve your balance and coordination

And according to Harvard Health:
  • It counteracts the effects of weight-promoting genes
  • It helps tame a sweet tooth
  • It reduces the risk of developing breast cancer
  • It eases joint pain
  • It boosts immune function
